Industrial city and capital of North Holland,
the Netherlands, 20 km/12 mi W of Amsterdam;
population (1988) 214,000. At Velsea to the N
a road-rail tunnel runs under the North Sea
Canal, linking N and S Holland. Industries
include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles,
and printing. Haarlem is famous for flowering
bulbs and has a 15th-16th-century cathedral
and a Frans Hals museum.
